Is becoming a real estate agent the right next step in your life? 

At least twice a week, people approach me to ask what the process of becoming an agent is really like. So, with that being the case, I’d like to share some insight about what it takes to be a Realtor. Hopefully this will help you come to a decision about your own future if entering real estate is something you’ve considered. 

First of all, there is good money to be made in the real estate industry. But this can be true of most career paths. Those who become top-performers in any industry will likely be better off financially than other practitioners. However, you’ve got to be 100% dedicated in real estate to achieve this kind of success (and income). 

In fact, the failure rate of those entering the real estate industry is about 80% within the first two years. Real estate isn’t that difficult to get into, but it is very hard to be successful at. 

Real estate is the only industry I can think of where instead of having people pay you to work for them, you pay them to work for...them. This is because you have to pay a brokerage to hold your license. You will also have a lot of marketing and overhead expenses that will be a drain on your savings account until you get through a few successful transactions.

Of course, it’s also important to consider the future of the real estate industry, which is likely to change exponentially within 10 years. Billions of dollars are being funnelled into the business as we know it, so how things operate a decade from now is likely to be very different from how the industry runs today. 

To succeed not only today but into the future of the industry, you will need to have a competitive advantage. You’ve got to be able to provide tangible value.
